The History of Raven
Raven Homeschool is an accredited, state-wide correspondence school operated by the Yukon-Koyukuk School District (YKSD), with offices located in Anchorage, Delta Junction, Eagle River, Fairbanks, Juneau, and Wasilla. Since its inception in 2002, Raven has partnered with thousands of families all over Alaska. It has always placed great emphasis on parental support and customized education to best meet the needs of each child. These factors assure the highest-quality education, making Raven Homeschool a leading program in Alaska today.
YKSD has long supported home education. In the late 1970's, Northwind School was created for homeschooling families within the school's boundaries, an area larger than any state east of the Mississippi (66,000 square miles). First using the Calvert Curriculum, Northwind School soon moved to designing specialized courses to meet the unique needs of their students. The daily instruction was provided by the parents, who had the support of their YKSD advisory teacher. The school, along with the rest of the YKSD schools, was accredited in 1993 through the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC). Northwind School successfully served hundreds of families, but eventually closed its doors. It was replaced by a new program designed to assist homeschooling families both inside the school district boundaries and throughout Alaska. This program was called Raven.
