Segway Costal Rainforest Adventure

This is a new activity that we have never done before, but we're really excited because some of our former Raven students will be our tour guides! Check out the details below and RSVP/pay today since space is limited and the activity is on Tuesday. They are giving us a great deal as a school group, so you don't want to miss this opportunity!

Date/Time: Tuesday, Oct 1 from 12:30-3:30pm

Place: Meet at the Goldbelt Tramway

Time: Arrive by 12:15pm to check in for a 12:30 departure

Age Requirements: 12yrs - Adult

Cost: $105 each (students and adults)

  • Pay online using this link.

  • Note: We are collecting the payments for all participants and then doing one payment to the company. When you submit your payment to Raven through the above link, please include the names of the participants, Juneau Office, and Segway in the description box.

RSVP required through the below signup link - Space is limited for this adventure to 10 participants. Please note that middle school students need a parent chaperone but high school students can come alone.

  • 10 participants (students + parents combined)

Waiver: All participants need to have a signed waiver due to the type of activity this is. Please take care of this in advance of the activity to simplify check-in.

(Information about the adventure from their website.)

Escape the crowds and snap stunning photos on an unforgettable Photo Safari Tour! Head off the beaten track today to see the coastal sights of Juneau on a unique type of personal scooter - a Segway. You'll hit the road and the beach on this fun, 3 hour tour.
Begin with a brief 6 mile transfer to the starting point. A short training session helps you get acquainted with your Segway- and how it responds to your body language. After training you’ll be given safety equipment and your own Segway. You’ll be surprised how quickly you get the hang of it and how fun it is to ride.
As you set out, you will immediately encounter views of the majestic Mendenhall Glacier. Cruise the coastline on the Douglas Hwy bike lane and make several stops for photos while you take in the pristine waters of Lynn Canal, part of the Inside Passage.

Because you are on a Segway, you will have the opportunity to intimately interact with nature. Listen for eagle calls in flight, the waves lapping the shoreline, and maybe even spy the occasional humpback whale.
As an added adventure, hop off your Segway and walk a 7 minute trail to a secluded beach to enjoy locally sourced refreshments. Immerse yourself in the Tongass National Forest, a temperate rain forest and the largest National Forest in the US. Continue to snap incredible photos while witnessing the panoramic views with your fellow travelers.

Throughout your journey, your guide will teach you about the diverse native flora and fauna. Don’t miss this extraordinary experience of seeing Alaska in an exceptional setting.

Grab a friend and lets ride!

Girls Gathering

This will be a casual meetup time for 5th-8th grade girls on the 1st & 3rd Thursdays each month from Sept-May led by Jaime Z. She plans to organize an assortment of simple activities for the ladies to enjoy together and make it a nice time to connect throughout the school year. The group size will be limited to 15 so that it doesn't get too large. Sometimes they will meet at the Raven office and other times they will have activities in the community. Let us know if you have any questions.

The second Girl's Gathering will be making fall wreaths.

The girls will be making fall wreaths this week and the materials for the wreaths have turned out to be a bit more expensive than expected, so it would help Jaime if each girl could bring $10 to help cover the cost. Don't let that stop you from attending though if you aren't able to contribute. Be sure to RSVP so that Jaime knows how many girls to expect for preparing materials.

Battle of the Books Kick Off

At the Kickoff Event, we will talk about what is involved in BOB and see who is interested in joining each of the teams. Even if you can't make it to the event, sign up at the link so we can see who is interested in joining each age group team. We will then work on figuring out a practice schedule that works for those who want to participate on each team. Each of the advisory teachers will divide up the coaching responsibilities for the different teams.

BOB Teams are made up of 1-3 students each, so if we have more than 3 students interested in a certain grade level team, we will practice/prepare together and host a local Battle first to determine which students will represent our office in the District Battles in Jan/Feb. We encourage as many students as are interested to sign up to participate in this fun annual competition.

Teams are broken down as follows:

  • K-2nd grade

  • 3rd-4th grade

  • 5th-6th grade

  • Middle School

  • High School

Battle of the Books in a Nutshell: Three students constitute a grade level team as follows: scribe, spokesperson, member at large, a fourth is the alternate. Each member reads the official book list for their level. During the scheduled competition, the students first battle teams from their own district by answering a series of questions with simply the title of the book and the author. The winning teams move on to battle other teams in other school districts within Alaska in the same manner. You can become an expert on a few books – so don’t let it discourage you from participating if you do not feel you can read them all!

The Battle of the Books is a statewide program sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Librarians with the goals of engaging students' interest and motivation in reading. Each year a committee of teachers and librarians select 12 to 15 fiction and non-fiction books for each grade level. The students discuss the books, answer quiz questions, and finally compete against other teams based on the questions. (For grades K-2, the books can be read to students.)

All competitions are held at the local, district & state (only grades 3-12) level usually in January, February and March. All competitions will be held through phone or video conferencing.

Getting Started With Computers | A Presentation and Resource for Homeschool Students.

Hello, Raven Families!

When it comes to our students' futures, computer skills are likely to be a very valuable asset in day-to-day life. Whether your student is going into STEM, the trades, or anything in between, knowing how to navigate a computer is either going to be highly useful or outright required.

On October 3rd from 2-3pm, Jakobe will be hosting a Computer Literacy 101 webinar which will function as both a presentation to jumpstart your students' computer skills, as well as a resource bank with helpful computer tips, tricks, and links that he has learned in his time working with computers. All students and parents are welcome!

Please note that our office will be closed Tuesday from 11am-2pm since all staff will be attending the event.

Join us at Sandy Beach for our annual fun, fall picnic. We will meet in the large log cabin shelter (Savikko #2) so we can have a great time rain or shine. There will be games and activities for all ages to enjoy, and you are welcome to bring a game/activity that you think would be fun to play there with friends. Let us know if you are planning on coming and what you will bring so we can know that we have a good assortment of options.

Reusable Silverware Challenge

Let's have some fun while supporting a healthy marine environment! The Challenge - bring your own reusable utensils to the picnic. This can be simple - snag a fork from your kitchen before you head out the door - or have some fun with it by making a fun pouch for your utensils or decorating their handles. We'll bring backups from the office in case people forget theirs or aren't able to bring their own, but let's have some fun and reduce our

We are going to tour their Midtown Scoop Shop where they craft their ice cream, enjoy a sample, and have plenty of time for Q&A. As an added bonus, their ice cream shop opens at noon, so you may purchase a treat to enjoy before you leave.

Cost: Free!

Expect the tour to last just 30-45 minutes. Tours are limited to 15 guests, including chaperones. Children under the age of 5 do not count in the 15.

You must RSVP below to secure your spot. Be sure you choose the correct day and time that you wish, as there are 4 options. You must include all chaperones and children 5 and older in your time spot. Do not include children under the age of 5 in the RSVP.

Monthly Movie & PJ Party

We have been having a great time with our monthly movie parties at the office so kids of all ages can come and enjoy watching a family-friendly movie together. Wear your PJ's (if you want), bring a snuggly blanket/pillow, and come hang out together the second Friday each month. We'll transform our activity room into a mini theater and provide snacks for the kids. Parents are welcome to stay but not required.

  • Join us for popcorn, treats, and kid-friendly movies each month.

  • Bring a pillow, bean bag, or other snuggly seat to add to your viewing comfort.

  • Please bring a refillable water bottle with you so we aren't going through so many of our little cups and you don't have to leave the "theater" to get a drink. :)

  • Please RSVP so we know how many kids to expect and can have enough popcorn popped for everyone.

  • We recommend arriving about 5 minutes early to get your treats from our "concession stand" and pick your seat since the movie will start right at 2:30pm and you don't want to miss it.

  • If you have any movie recommendations, let us know.

October's Movie - Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

In their big screen debut, clay animation characters Wallace and Gromit run a humane pest-control outfit called "Anti-Pesto." But, while protecting the gardens of their neighbors from infiltrating pests, they come face-to-face with an enormous rabbit that is ravaging the veggies. They try to find a way to capture it or drive it off before the town's big vegetable competition, but a hunter is also commissioned to go after the giant vermin.

Swim Social (AGB)

Raven parent Amy Carney is organizing swim socials for all ages. Here is the plan for this month:

  • Tuesday, October 15 at 2pm at AGB for an hour

  • Monday, October 28 at 2pm at DPAC for an hour

"All ages welcome, but I am coming with a late grade schooler. We’re just going to have fun, play, socialize, and get PE credit. Parents don’t have to swim. Maybe sometimes I won’t either, depending on attendance and what other parents want. Drop-off is ok, but I won’t be taking contact info in case of an emergency. Kids dropped off need to be old enough to know their own swim safety and have their own emergency contact info. We can wait around each desk area for 5-10 minutes before going into the pool so families have a chance to go in together. Eventually we’ll just go straight into the pool. I’ll be the one with the rainbow swim cap. You can provide my mobile 907-326-1698 for text or call with questions." ~Amy

Online Chess Club

Chess Club: for students who love chess or want to learn/improve their skills.

If your student already loves chess or wants to learn how to play, all are welcome. We have set up an online chess club for our school district (YKSD) so Raven and River students can play one another all over the state. This is a closed club just for our students, so when your student joins, please do the following so that we know your student is enrolled with us when the joining request comes through.

  • Option 1: If your student already has a chess.com account and wants to use that one, please email cbacke@yksd.com with your student's username so that he knows to allow them into our club once they have requested to join.

  • Option 2: If your student doesn't have an account yet with chess.com or if they want to make a new one for this purpose, please have them add their location to their username (i.e. ANC, DEL, ER, FAI, JUN, WAS). This will also make it fun so you can see where the students are located who you are playing against. You are welcome to use your student's district email address for this purpose which is listed in Brightways under "Credentials."

Live Games & Tournaments: Tuesdays starting at 3:15pm

Students can play games with members of our club whenever they like; however, it often takes a while when the players are not logged in at the same time and have to wait for their opponent to make a move. To help with this, we'll have live games and tournaments happening on Tuesdays starting at 3:15pm. This is a great time for your student to log in and play live games with other YKSD Chess Club members. There will also be opportunities in the future for students to earn cool rewards for their achievements and bragging rights as they level up their skills and ratings.

  1. Log in: https://www.chess.com/club/yksd-chess-club

  2. Click on "Members" in the menu on the right side of the screen.

  3. Click the green "challenge" button next to someone's name to start a live game with them.

  4. Have a question or need help? Click the envelope "send message" button next to our "Super Admin" Chuck Backe (username Bladdies) to get assistance while logged in.

Senior Meeting and Activity

Graduating seniors (and juniors), plan to join us for some important information, to meet your fellow classmates, for some snacks, and an overall great time! At this first meeting, we'll be working on choosing the activities for the upcoming meetings, so you definitely want to be here. This will be both a valuable and fun opportunity, so you don't want to miss it.

For the 24-25 school year, we want to build more comradery between the graduating class members, so we are working on planning monthly activities to connect students. We will briefly review some important information for students to keep in mind, enjoy some snacks, and do a fun activity together. If you will be graduating with Raven this year, please plan to join us for these monthly events!

Here are the tentative dates for the Senior Meetings this year (subject to change if needed):

  • Oct 17

  • Nov 14

  • Dec 12

  • Jan 6

  • Feb 13

  • Mar 13

  • Apr 10

  • May 8

Activity Ideas

Below are some ideas that past graduating classes have come up with to go along with our monthly meetings. Think about what you might like to do with your fellow classmates so you can bring ideas to our Oct meeting. If you can't attend the meeting this month but have ideas for what you would like to do, email Holly so she can compile a list.

Prizes for Attendance

We will be spinning a prize wheel each month to determine a winner from those who attend. If you have ideas for what you would like to win, let Holly know. We will keep track of attendance from month to month and then draw for a Grand Prize winner before graduation, so the more meetings you attend through the year, the better your chances of winning will be since each time you attend will earn you another "ticket" for the prize.

Chess Club (In-Office)

Chess Club - for students who love chess or want to learn

If your student already loves chess or wants to learn how to play, all are welcome. We have enough chess sets for 22 kids to play at the same time, so please let us know if your student will be attending so we know how many boards to get set up.

There will be mini lessons taught to the students so they can learn new moves and strategies. Some weeks the kids will get to compete in a tournament style bracketed round of play. There is also an option for the kids to play online using chess.com so that if they can't make it in to the office for club, they can still play with kids who are here or others joining from home. Every week the kids have a great time!

Swim Social (DPAC)
